The Leeds Art Fund is currently running a Memorial Appeal in memory of our former Chair, Ben Read. Ben retired as LAF Chair in 2012, but remained a Trustee of the LAF until his unexpected death in October 2016. Ben, as many will know, was a highly respected art historian, with a passion for Victorian public sculpture. The LAF Ben Read Appeal aims to raise funds to conserve, restore and reinstate the dislodged figure of Industry from Sir George Frampton’s monumental sculpture of Queen Victoria, located on the edge of Woodhouse Moor.

The LAF Ben Read Appeal is the first stage of a project that will eventually lead to the conservation of the whole monument to Queen Victoria, something that we believe is a fitting tribute to Ben as one of the leading scholars of Victorian Sculpture.

Our target for the first phase of the LAF Ben Read Appeal for the conservation and restoration to the figure of Industry is estimated to be c.£20,000; and thanks to the very generous help and support of the LAF Membership we are making excellent progress towards this target. Alongside the very generous donations from members of the LAF, we are also currently seeking funding from other charitable bodies and institutions to allow us to complete the first phase of this project.

We are sincerely grateful to everyone who has donated funds towards the Ben Read Appeal so far - we have created a list of those individuals and organisations that have contributed towards the Ben Read Appeal so far (see link to list of donors); but we need more funds of course, so please do keep the donations coming in.

Should you wish to make a donation towards the Ben Read Appeal, please download the Ben Read Appeal leaflet and complete the donation form and send your donation and form to the address on the form.

Please keep your eyes on the Ben Read Appeal in the LAF News; we are planning a number of events and talks associated with the Appeal - and we very much hope to welcome our donors to these events.

Thank you so much to all who have donated funds towards the Ben Read Appeal.
